Natural remedies for menopause

Menopause can be a time to experience a newfound sense of freedom and personal growth.  It’s a normal stage in life that all women experience however, for some women uncomfortable symptoms can have an impact on relationships and lifestyles. Symptoms of menopause can include insomnia, anxiety, hot flushes, sweats, low sex drive, vaginal dryness, and heart palpitations.

There is, however, a natural option, using plant phytoestrogens that supports the transition through menopause and helps to combat post-menopausal health risks.

What are Phytoestrogens?

Phytoestrogens are found in plants and mimic the actions of oestrogen in the body. A particular type of phytoestrogen, known as an isoflavone, can help to balance see-sawing hormones in the run up to, during and after menopause.

A diet rich in phytoestrogens can help women manage the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause1, however the typical Kiwi diet contains only small amounts and supplementation is often advised.

Red Clover to the Rescue

Red Clover is a herb and is one of the richest sources of natural isoflavones.  It contains twice as many types and in higher concentration than soy.2

Red Clover is a natural option to menopause management.  It’s backed by 15 years of scientific research, proven results3,4 and is safe for long term use.5

When will I see results?

Every body is different and responses can vary to Red Clover supplementation.  For some women symptom relief occurs quickly while for others it can take up to 8 weeks.  Red Clover should be taken for at least 8 weeks to see how well it will work for you.

Healthy lifestyle choices are important to maximise the effectiveness of Red Clover and will help you to navigate your way through menopause and beyond:

  • Eat a healthy diet that includes sources of calcium
  • Exercise for heart and bone health, and include weight bearing exercises
  • Moderate exposure to sunshine will trigger vitamin D production for strong bones
  • Help to manage your mood and stress levels with techniques such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation and, sufficient sleep.  Be sure to seek support from family and friends or a health professional.

Maintaining healthy gut flora is also important – these friendly bugs help to metabolise and recycle your body’s hormones and phytoestrogens.  Enhance gut health by:

  • Consuming prebiotics and probiotics
  • Eating foods naturally high in probiotics such as yoghurt or fermented foods

Red Clover is not recommended during pregnancy or for children.  It is recommended that you consult your health care professional if taking the oral contraceptive pill or hormone replacement therapy.
