What is lime caviar?
Lime caviar is the pulp of the finger lime, the Australian superfruit that grows on trees native to the sub-tropical rainforests on the east coast of Australia, on the border of NSW and Queensland.
Finger limes range from deep green to pale pink in colour and resemble small cucumbers or ‘fingers’, growing to around 10cm long. The pulp contains small beads of juice that look like tiny translucent pearls of caviar, hence the name. The pearls have an intense lime flavour and are increasingly seen on the menus at high-end restaurants and cocktail bars.
The fruit has been used for many thousands of years by local indigenous communities, who favour it both as a food and for its active properties, being very high in vitamin C. Today, finger limes continue to be sustainably harvested – they’re hand-picked by the local community to ensure the preservation of the natural resource.
Why is this relevant to a natural skincare brand like Antipodes? Lime caviar is increasingly considered a valuable ingredient for skincare, due to high natural levels of beneficial AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids).
Why AHAs are a must for healthy, smooth skin
AHAs exfoliate your skin’s surface to remove dead skin cells, which in turn encourages cell renewal to foster a smoother, brighter, more-even complexion.
Skincare containing AHAs is ideal for dry skin, mature skin, or skin that’s sun-damaged or uneven, as it helps to reveal a more refined skin texture with less visible fine lines and marks.
Lime caviar extract stands out among AHAs in that it gently accelerates exfoliation by stimulating TRPV3 (Transcient Receptor Potential Vanilloid-3) synthesis, which weakens the cell structure, triggering desquamation (skin shedding) and promoting skin regeneration.
A clinical study showed that lime caviar extract exfoliated effectively but gently, helping to reveal a more-even skin tone, with no irritation. Results displayed a 26% increase in exfoliation effect after 30 minutes for 100% of participants*.
