We caught up with Antipodes Founder Elizabeth Barbalich to hear what’s in store for your award-winning favourite.
Congratulations Antipodes for taking out People’s Choice in our Best of Natural Awards. How does it feel?
It’s extra special to win an award voted for by our devotees! I launched Antipodes over 18 years ago, so to be winning a highly coveted award like this, 18 years on, is really satisfying and humbling. Thank you to everyone who voted.
Antipodes has a very loyal community, what do you think has contributed to this?
We work super-hard to deliver exceptional world-class products. We are proud to have scientific proof that our products are just as good, if not better, than premium synthetic skincare.
We never take our community for granted – always striving to outdo ourselves with new product development, for that surprise and delight factor.
It’s our community that are the real superstars – that they put their hard-earned money into Antipodes is never taken for granted.
On top of taking out People’s Choice, Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream and Aura Manuka Honey Mask have taken out the Best Face Moisturiser and Best Face Mask categories, what are your favourite ways to use these products?
Aura Manuka Honey Mask is a really effective spot treatment, thanks to its very high concentration of manuka honey, so sometimes at our HQ in Wellington I’ll see a team member with a little dot of Aura on their forehead and I can’t help but smile.
Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream is the final step in my nighttime ritual, particularly in the colder months when my naturally dry skin becomes drier. Whenever I apply my night cream, I always have a little mindful moment – some slow, deep breaths as I massage it into my skin and let go of the day.
What’s been Antipodes’ favourite moment of 2022?
My personal favourite moment was a media event in Paris, where I introduced our newest products, Flora Probiotic Skin-Rescue Hyaluronic Mask and Credo Probiotic Ferment Revitalise Serum.
Even in a highly discerning market such as France, Antipodes is seen to be a leader in clean beauty. We’ve had widespread feedback that our new formulations have stepped up a major level due to the high-tech ingredients, and the textures have blown people away. So that gave me a real buzz.
What are your top 3 all-time favourite Antipodes products that are must-haves for every clean beauty enthusiast?
- Grapeseed Butter Cleanser – I cannot go past this for a double cleanse, it’s so luxurious to use and leaves my dry and sensitive skin so happy and nourished. I love the fragrance and texture too.
- Credo Probiotic Ferment Revitalise Serum is my current fave – it leaves my skin super clear, so no blocked pores and a completely even skin tone, and I can definitely go sans foundation after using it for a couple of weeks. I use probiotics for gut health, so I love to have a good option for skin, to help balance and strengthen my skin barrier.
- Speaking of probiotics, Flora Probiotic Skin-Rescue Hyaluronic Mask is the holy grail of calming, freshening masks for sensitive skin. I love the feel of it – it’s silky soft, thanks to plant hyaluronic and harakeke gel, and leaves my skin soft as a baby, calm, and refreshed.
Any exciting news or new Antipodes product launches we should stay tuned for next year?
So much exciting news! First up, we’re focused on some ambitious sustainability goals for 2023: 100% plastic free (no easy feat, let me tell you!), 100% kerbside recyclable in New Zealand and Australia, and 100% traceable ingredients.
As for product launches, all I can reveal is that there will be more than one new Antipodes formulation in 2023, and that you won’t have to wait too long for the first one!
What trending skincare ingredients should we look out for in 2023?
I’m excited about the skin-enhancing properties of lime caviar, which are the ‘pearls’ from the finger lime, a superfruit native to Australia. They’re a natural source of AHAs – anyone who knows me knows that smooth, even-toned skin is one of my holy grails.
I’d also call out any sustainable ingredients derived from sugar, such as the high-tech anti-aging peptide Sepilift DPHP, which originates from water, sugarcane, and healthy bacteria.
Finally, what are your ultimate healthy skin tips?
- Invest in a high-quality serum – serums contain a concentrated dose of actives and their light molecular weight means that they’re easily absorbed, so the good stuff gets straight to work addressing your skin concerns.
- Don’t forget sunscreen – we hear this over and over but it’s worth repeating because a surprising amount of people don’t do it: apply an SPF daily, without fail. If you are going outdoors, no matter the weather, do not miss this step!
- If I don’t keep my stress levels in check, my skin reacts with breakouts and increased sensitivity. What works for me are daily jogs or dog walks, eight hours sleep a night (when I can manage it), and a nutritious plant-based diet.
